
1966 NCAA Championship Texas Western vs. Kentucky

On March 19- 1966- Texas Western College- now known as the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP)- put an all-black starting five on the floor for the first time in an NCAA basketball championship. That night the Texas Western Miners- led by coach Don Haskins with star players David Lattin and Bobby Joe Hill- defeated coach Adolph Rupp€™s #1 ranked all-white Kentucky Wildcats- 72-65. Lattin set the tone early with a thunderous dunk- highlighting the strength of the Miners- while Hill€™s back to back steals showed their quickness. Other key players for the miners included Harry Flourney- Willie Cager- Willie Worsley and Nevil Shed. The Kentucky Wildcats featured Pat Riley- Louis Dampier and Larry Conley.
