New York, May 31, 2006 – Oddsmaker Danny Sheridan, best known as the sports analyst for USA Today, has listed odds for #1 draft picks in the NFL to win the Rookie of the Year award.
These odds are of particular interest to sports collectors who enjoy collecting rookie items of players, particularly trading cards, and look for ways to measure the success probability for players as they make purchases.
Sheridan has listed running back Reggie Bush of New Orleans as 3:1 against winning Rookie of the Year honors, making him the favorite. He places Carolina’s Deangelo Williams and Pittsburgh’s Santonio Holmes at 6:1, and San Francisco’s Vernon Davis at 8:1.
At 10:1 he lists New England’s Laurence Maroney, Houston’s Mario Williams, and Tennessee’s LenDale White. Joseph Addai of Indianapolis is 11:1.
At 12:1 are A.J. Hawk (Green Bay), Michael Huff (Oakland), Bobby Carpenter (Dallas), Chad Jackson (New England), and Sinorice Moss (New York Giants).
Sheridan puts 15:1 against for D’Brickashaw Ferguson (New York Jets), and Ernie Sims (Detroit), and 18:1 against Matt Leinart (Arizona), Brodrick Bunkley (Philadelphia), Tamba Hall (Kansas City) and Chad Greenway (Minnesota). He rates Mercedes Lewis (Jacksonville) as 20:1, Vince Young (Tennessee), Donte Whitner (Buffalo) and Jason Allen (Miami) as 25:1, and Devin Hester (Chicago) and Jay Cutler (Denver) as 30:1
Breaking down the rookie class by skill set, Sheridan rates Vince Young as 2:1 to throw for the most touchdowns by a rookie, with Leinart 5:1, Cutler 10:1, Kellen Clement (Jets) 25:1 and Charlie Whitehearst (SD) 50:1.
He rates Maroney (NE) as 3:1 to lead rookies in rushing yardage, with DeAngelo Williams (Car) at 4:1, Addai (Ind) 5:1, LenDale White (Tenn) 6:1, Brian Calhoun (Detroit) 10:1, Leon Washington (Jets) 25:1, Maurice Dre (Jacksonville), 30:1.
For rookie receivers, he puts Vernon Davis (SF) at 3:1 to lead in receiving yards, Chad Jackson (NE) at 5:1, Moss (NYG) and Holmes (Pitt) 7:1 and Greg Jennings (GB) 10:1.
Most sacks for 2006 rookies: Mario Williams 4:1, Hale (KC) 6:1, Sims (Det) 8:1, Manny Lawson (SF) 10:1, Hawk (GB) 10:1.
