Limited trading cards of Griffey, Jordan and David Price are slowly being discovered

North Las Vegas, NV (February 12, 2009) – It’s official: Upper Deck has produced three special short-printed cards inside its 2009 Upper Deck Series One Baseball. The first and previously announced short-printed card is of Joe DiMaggio (#0) showing the “Yankee Clipper” smiling after he tied the then-MLB consecutive games hit streak at 44. And now the company is confirming that two more short-printed cards appear in the set.

The first shows two of Upper Deck’s most famous spokesmen: Ken Griffey Jr. and Michael Jordan. Both legends are featured on the same card wearing uniforms from a team they both share some history with: the Chicago White Sox. Griffey made history last season with the White Sox when he moved into fifth place all-time for career home runs. Jordan, on the other hand, made big headlines when he temporarily gave up his basketball career and traded it for a stint on the baseball diamond playing for the White Sox’s minor league Birmingham affiliate in 1994.

The second of the newly unveiled short-print cards is of Tampa Bay first-year hurler David Price. The card is a variation of his 2009 rookie card (#401) using a different picture. The more limited version shows an image of Price sporting a white jersey with his glove on the mound and calling out a batter.

“We look to leverage our assets in spokesmen like Joe DiMaggio, Michael Jordan and Ken Griffey Jr. as a way to provide collectors with some added value and chase in our first baseball release of 2009,” said Jason Masherah, Upper Deck’s senior brand manager. “Upper Deck produced the first David Price card ever back in 2005 when he was a member of USA Baseball. Having watched him develop into a top pitching talent over the years made us want to do something a little different with his first rookie card. We think this variation will help create some additional interest without compromising the integrity of the base set.”

2009 Upper Deck Series One Baseball is currently available in stores.
